COLE SLID HIS HAND across the bed, searching for Juliet’s warm flesh, but all he felt was the cold sheet. He opened his eyes and looked over to see that she was gone, probably already up and having a cup of coffee.

He yawned and stretched, disappointed not to wake up next to her, but looking forward to finding her there in his house looking deliciously tousled from sleep. Her having spent the night would mark a step forward in their relationship, and he felt as though they’d grown closer last night. They were making progress.

He got up and dressed, then wandered out into the living room, a little wary that he’d heard nothing but silence. He went into the kitchen, and Juliet wasn’t there. Nor was she anywhere else in the house, he discovered when he looked around.

Damn it.

Maybe she had an early-morning appointment—on a Sunday? Or maybe she’d tried to wake him to say goodbye, but he’d been sleeping too heavily. Even though he was a light sleeper?

Or maybe he needed to face the fact that all their progress had been in his head, that Juliet had left in the middle of the night because she didn’t want to face him the morning after.

In the living room again, he sat on the couch where they’d made love the night before and picked up the phone from the end table. He dialed her number and listened to one ring, two rings, three rings…

“Hi, it’s not me. It’s the machine. Leave a message,” a tinny version of Juliet’s voice instructed.

“Hey. Where are you? Why’d you leave without saying goodbye? Call me.” He hung up the phone and sat listening to the silence.

This was not the way he’d imagined last night that he’d be spending Sunday morning—alone and perplexed, frustrated as hell that Juliet fled like a wild animal when he tried to get close. He’d envisioned them spending the day together, having breakfast, talking over the Sunday paper, walking to the park, doing all the lazy Sunday things he loved to do and realized now he wanted a companion to share them with.

Sure, lots of women had been place-fillers, for months or even years. But none of them had felt like The One. None of them had been women he’d wanted to spend the rest of his life getting to know. None until Juliet, and if she couldn’t figure out how great they were together, then maybe he was wrong about her.

Maybe she wasn’t The One after all.

Pissed off, he undressed again and showered, determined to get out of the house and keep himself from brooding all day.

A half hour later, he was driving to Max and Delia’s house without having bothered to call and ask if they’d mind his dropping in. It was a family tradition to stop by unannounced, and he knew they’d be arriving home from Sunday mass right about now, along with bags of beignets they always picked up on the way.

He parked in the driveway behind their behemoth Suburban and rang the doorbell.
